Hunting for Eland
The spiral-horned Eland, similar in size to a moose, is best hunted during the dry autumn months, especially after grass burns. Hunting Eland is challenging due to their ability to cover ground quickly, requiring fitness to track them in free-range or hilly terrain. Methods include spot-and-stalk or from a blind, especially for bow hunters. In Namibia and the Kalahari, they can be tracked like larger African species. Eland, the largest antelope in sub-Saharan Africa, is found throughout South Africa in parks and high-fenced properties. Known for their size and agility, they have excellent eyesight and may bark like a Kudu when alarmed. Old bulls turn blue-grey with a massive dewlap. Their meat, comparable to lean beef, is a camp favorite. Hunting a Lord Derby Eland is the pinnacle of African antelope hunts.
