Hunting for Sable

The sable antelope, a striking member of the Hippotragus tribe, is known for its regal appearance and shiny black coat in males, contrasted by white belly and facial markings. Females and young are dark reddish-brown. Slightly smaller than the roan, sables are majestic and aggressive, with bulls having exceptionally long horns. They prefer open woodlands near grasslands and are highly territorial. Both sexes carry horns. The horns of the sable bull are exceptional and the longest of any African antelope, excepting the kudu. When hunting sable in the herd, look for the bull to be somewhere on the periphery. The sable bull is a proud animal and appears to remain aloof; this rather cocky attitude makes him not all that difficult to approach. Use this trait against him, but remember his aggressive nature and stay at the ready in case of a charge. The sable’s unique horns are effective in defense and make it a highly coveted trophy in Africa.
